In the movie Bambi, there is a great scene where someone mentions that Thumper is twitterfated. Or Thumper says it, I can’t remember. It is spring, and someone is in love and doesn’t care who knows it. That is me right now.

Today I celebrate Twitter. And you can bet that in the past year if someone had told me I would be saying that, I would have laughed in their face.

Twitter was overwhelming. I didn’t want to be connected all of the time. I couldn’t keep track of so much stuff and that frustrated me to the point where it was impossible for me to attempt to try it even a little,  so I froze.

And yet, I knew there were smart people out there that were using Twitter, and thriving, sharing, learning… and I wanted to do that too.

Thank goodness for good and patient teachers like @jarhartz! I tried, baby baby steps.  She showed me tweet deck so that I could manage the #TCRWP chats on Wednesdays. That made a HUGE difference. And gradually I noticed that I was on Twitter once in a while. And little by little, my fear and frustration began to disipate. This week: a milestone. I celebrate that on Friday I tweeted that I wanted to know if there are any other fourth grade teachers who use Hound Dog True as a read aloud. I haven’t gotten much back, not yet…but what I am excited about, and celebrating, is the fact that have found a way to expand my circle of colleagues. I can reach out into the community of excellent teachers who are out there everyday. We can share and grow together. THAT IS AMAZING!

And my fear of being connected all of the time, not really happening. I turn off the phone, simple. And I am learning that I will just have to live with the reality that there is soooo much good stuff out there every minute, and I can’t keep track of it all. But when I choose to tune in, there is a wealth of resources and ideas just streaming by in a river of smart and talent. I can dip my toes in, I can just observe, or I can grab a raft and float. Heck, I can even grab a paddle and fully participate. What fun. What a problem to have. I am completely twitterfated.
